Schanzenviertel district

Happen Pappen

Great vegan restaurant in the heart of St. Pauli, directly opposite the large bunker at Heiligengeistfeld. The owner Cathy offers vegan dishes with a twist – from hearty breakfasts to unusual burger creations (e.g. “Spring Champ”, seitan pattie, green mayo, vegetables). There is definitely something for the nutrition-conscious guest. The food here is cooked with passion, love, conviction and experience – word has already spread around the city, making the small restaurant a popular meeting place for hip Schanzenviertel residents since it opened in 2016. Daily changing lunch menu, menu available daily via Facebook!

Gefundenes Fressen

The Karoviertel, often referred to as the little sister of the Schanze, has recently added a real gastronomic sensation: A super chic restaurant that caters to the discerning meat lover. The menu consists exclusively of controlled, well-hung steaks and juicy burgers, but there are also cakes in the afternoon and a sumptuous breakfast menu on Sundays, as the owner of this gem would put it. He is the well-known rapper Samy Deluxe, who often makes an appearance in the restaurant and from time to time puts on a little live show directly from the store online. Check it out!

La Sepia

This traditional Portuguese fish restaurant has been located in the heart of the Schanze since 1983 and has been in a prime location since moving from the Schulterblatt directly to the Neuer Pferdemarkt. A must for anyone who appreciates freshly prepared fish in countless variations and loves rustic Portuguese cuisine. The fish is delivered fresh daily and prepared right in front of the guests in a central, open kitchen. Fresh wines and crisp salads round off the culinary experience – in summer, the large outdoor terrace beckons with a great view of the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood. A popular meeting place for both locals and visitors to Hamburg from all over the world!

Bistro Carmagnole

In a small side street you will find a top-class gastronomic insider tip! The “Bistro Carmagnole” is dedicated to upscale French cuisine without being overpriced. The small but exquisite menu is seasonal, with classics such as moules frites on offer, as well as oysters, steak tartare and boeuf bourguignon to tempt the discerning palate. In summer, in addition to the cozy dining room, there are also some tables on the street, just like in Paris, for example. The bistro was named after a song from the French Revolution and attracts international gourmets as well as artists, writers and bohemians from all over St. Pauli. A great mix. Reservations recommended!

Okzident

Anyone with a taste for something special is sure to be quickly impressed by this extraordinary restaurant. It is located in the former Museum of Ethnology, now called “MARKK”, and can be visited without an admission ticket. Oriental specialties are served here – matzo, falafel and a variety of unusual dishes are on the menu. The restaurant can also be booked for private parties. You can sit in the former inner courtyard of the museum, which has been covered over and impresses with its spectacular architecture! A visit to the museum afterwards is highly recommended!

Mandelmehl und Zuckerei

This somewhat hidden bakery in a quiet, idyllic corner of the district offers everything a classic sweet tooth could desire. Since 2015, the bakery has been dedicated to the art of French patisserie – tarts, croissants, macarons and éclairs are offered in a quality that is unmatched in Hamburg. Attached to the bakery is a small, cozy café, where you can sit outside in summer to relax before work and university and recharge your batteries for the day. All the baked goods are also available to take home. A real insider tip!

Cafe Leonar

Until the expulsion and extermination of Jews in Germany during the National Socialist dictatorship, the Grindelviertel was the center of life for many Jewish families. For some years now, there has been a Jewish café in the district again, the “Cafe Leonar”. Directly opposite the reopened “Josef-Carlebach-Schule”, it has been dedicated to young Jewish cuisine and classic salon culture with all its traditions since 2008. Newspapers and books are available to browse through, you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a delicious piece of cake while watching the mostly student life “am Grindel” pass by and enjoy the atmosphere of the neighborhood. The “Cafe Leonar” sees itself as a neighborhood meeting place for people of all religions and lifestyles, as long as they show respect and tolerance. In the late afternoon, it turns into a bar and concerts and cabaret often round off the evening.

Pony Bar

If you want to get into the student hustle and bustle, this is the place for you. Connected to the so-called “Pferdestall”, a building belonging to the University of Hamburg, you can meet here between lectures and seminars to chat or work on your laptop. A café during the day, the “Pony-Bar” turns into a classic pub in the evening, where you can have a nightcap after a movie at the adjacent “Abaton-Kino” – outside on the large forecourt in summer!
